This is the piece that I have been the most excited about. It will be my headliner piece for the Anime Revolution happening at the Vancouver Convention Centre on August 4, 2017. It contains some of the most iconic characters from the different Studio Ghibli productions.

It was quite a bit of work to composite all the characters together and showcase them in a cohesive way. There were also SO MANY amazing characters to choose from. I’m so excited to finally share this piece with everyone. I hope that you all like it.

It’s a perfect gift for any ghibli fan!

I have to admit that Spirited Away is by far my favorite Studio Ghibli movie. I love the message that the movie brings. Keep Moving forward. There may be loneliness in your past, but you will become stronger because of it.

Who can resist the beautiful scenery and magnificent story lines of the art from Studio Ghibli? The characters from their productions are simply iconic. They are my all time favorite anime production company. I painted this piece while listening to piano pieces of their animes’ theme songs.
I absolutely love the concept for this piece. My husband and I thought of it together. On the bus schedule, you will see that I’ve replaced the bus times with the year for when each of the their iconic movies were published. The characters at the bus stop are also lined up in accordance with their production year.

It’s a perfect gift for any ghibli fan!

In anticipation for my debut at the Anime Revolution Convention in August, I will be releasing a series anime prints. To kick start, here is a print of Rem from one of my favorite animes for the year Re:Zero . I think it has one of the best plot lines and the illustrations are so beautiful. Rem has such a big heart in the anime, so I decided to paint her as the Queen of Hearts.

8.5″ x 11″
$30 (Archival Print)- Available Upon Request

Started this beautiful piece on Canada Day. I love the beautiful palette of pastel colours used in this piece. The walls of the ocean also look so translucently magical. Glad that I put in the extra time to fix those details. My husband and I just finished watching the Moana Disney movie one week ago and I have been wanting to paint baby Moana all week. I always thought the movie was missing a scene – the moment when baby Moana high-fives the sea turtle after she helps him back into the ocean. Just my two sense……

Go discover your adventure on your own time, not on someone else’s schedule. I tried to highlight this theme by having Alice holding her own pocket watch, instead of having her chase after a rabbit checking on his own time on his watch.

Painting the world into a more beautiful place. One brush stroke at a time.

This is an Alice in Wonderland inspired piece, combined with a friend’s story of perseverance and grit. Life is not always full of rainbows and roses, but we have the ability to build a ladder and paint our own happiness.

Happiness is a state of mind.

‘Moonshine’. Just had this idea for a painting late in the evening and couldn’t stop painting until I got everything down on canvas . With each brush stroke, the idea for the painting flowed out so naturally. The dreamy colours of the fluffy clouds came out just as I had expected. It’s a delicate piece with Alice holding out a teacup to fill out on some magical moonshine. It’s an Alice in Wonderland inspired piece with a twist on the tea party theme.

The Hanbok Cat is part of my animals dressed in traditional clothing series painted originally in gouache. The pop of colours added to the hanbok is one of my favourite aspects of this painting. The pattern on the hanbok features cherry blossoms blooming at sunset with a pair of flying cranes meandering by. It’s a piece that exudes warmth and preludes the coming of spring as the cherry blossoms bloom.

For the month of February, I had dedicated alot of my time to the #opusdailypractice and came up with some great ideas for new techniques and styles. As a result, I did not get a chance to post any of my new work until now.

I’m proud to announce that Peter Panda is making a comeback! As some of you may already know, Peter Panda is the main character for my upcoming Children’s book and I’ve decided to draw a special series dedicated to this playful character.

As well as starting this new series, I have started to work on a new medium called gouache. Gouache is an opaque highly pigmented watermedia that has been around for over 600 years. I am especially excited about this Holbein gouache that I recently purchased from my local Opus.

Hope that you guys enjoy this style as much as I love drawing it.

“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”- Albert Einstein

I remember this quote from a long time ago. It always reminds me to never give up searching for my own niche, my own happiness.

Fish for a Wish

Original Acrylic on Canvas
16″x 20″
$90
Status: SOLD

Fish for a wish is a continuation from my previous piece “Counting Shleep.” If a dream is a wish our heart makes, and every star in the sky is representative of a wish. I imagine that there will be millions, upon trillions of stars in the sky to symbolize the hope and happiness for all of humanity.

So whether you wish upon a star tonight, or you are still searching for your dream in life, have a sweet and beautiful dream. Keep fishing and keep searching, you will know when you find what is right.
I’m not sure if it is visible in this photograph, but I chose to add some silver paint for the stars. I hope they will glisten at just the right angle when you are looking at it.

This painting is currently on display at Sakura Sushi.

Words can’t describe how happy I was when I first thought of the idea for this painting. It just popped into my head in the middle of the night and I just couldn’t stop painting throughout the night. I wanted to convey the feeling of warmth and coziness when you hit the perfect spot while lying in bed. The feeling when you are at peace and rest at the same time.

This is a continuing saga of a new style of art I’m trying. It combines my old love for manga art with animals. I hope this painting finds a good home 🙂

p.s. Do you get the Alice in Wonderland vibe from this painting too? Dreaming of wonderland perhaps? 😉

I am on a roll today! This is the second piece for the day and I have been wanting to paint this idea for a LONG time. There are always occasional orca sightings near the waters of Vancouver. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be sailing on the waters and then realize that there is a pod of whales swimming along sides?

Well, the idea sounds cool right now, but I’m sure that it would be another matter when it actually happens.

Still….Sailing with the majestic giants of the sea. That sounds pretty awesome.

Just getting back into the swing of things after taking a break to work on another project. I thought I would start off by trying some abstract art again. I recently purchased some molding paste and have be eagerly waiting for the perfect opportunity to use it.

I have been fiddling with the idea of using molding paste to create 3D effects for flower petals for awhile. It was easy enough to apply the molding paste, but getting into the groove to paint these peonies took longer than I expected. Loving how the paint POPS on top of the molding and inside the crevices!

It just so happens that a pirate ship full of kids sailed by when I started painting this. There was alot of laughter overflowing out of the ship. I couldn’t help but capture their course as they broke into the still water, creating these delicate ripples towards the shore.

It took longer than I expected to find the perfect species of leaf to create the right paint texture. I must say that it is very challenging to paint abstract.

Herb and I took the Sunday off to do some outdoor painting. The weather was cloudy with an occasional breeze. It was a good day for painting. The grassy knoll where we painted was a quiet area where we relaxed and painted at our leisure. There were a number of other painters sprawled across the grass enjoying the lazy Sunday 🙂

This was a last minute painting that I painted on a whim. It turned out better than I expected.I especially like the nice blend of colours that I had for the sky.

This is another abstract piece that I rarely do and is alittle outside my comfort zone.

My first piece for the month of May was done at none other than Granville Island, Vancouver. Opus recently had their annual outdoor painting challenge on May 15 and this painting was born as a result of it. Abstract art is an area that I have little experience in, but I thought that I would give it a whirl. I love the way the leaf prints created texture for the painting.

For those of you who have been to Granville Island in the past, do you recognize where this is? Hint: It’s close to the Kids’ Market 😉

Perception & Realization

Original Acrylic
8″x 10″ (Set of 2)
$120
Status: AVAILABLE

This is my submissions for the annual Piece of Mind exhibition.

Depression can be a dark and lonely place. It takes courage and strength to step away from the darkness. A patient suffering from depression once told me that the hardest thing she ever had to do was to step back through the doorway of her own home after an extended hospital stay – for fear of slipping back into depression. When asked how she was able to overcome her fear, she responded:

“I tell my bad thoughts to go away and that they don’t have any power over me anymore. I am stronger.”

Psychological health is a journey of self discovery and it involves changing one’s perception. These two pieces of artwork portray this process of transformation as one climbs out of the abyss to a place of light and hope. My wish is that my art can also help remind healthcare providers of the multiple perspectives to consider when serving such complex individuals.

This piece signifies a new start for me. This month, I invested on some professional grade acrylic paint and the resulting colours look AMAZING! It fits perfectly with the colourful under the sea theme, not to mention, the extra investment on a thicker canvas with deco shadowbox. I am very happy with the results.

In this piece of artwork, I integrated my interest in crocheting together with my painting. I must say that the mermaid doll looks absolutely adorable and it was so much fun to make.

Thank you to Herb for the wonderful idea!

Hawthorn in May

Hawthorn in May

Original Acrylic
24″x 30″
$550
Status: AVAILABLE (Previously displayed at the ROAM Gallery)

This piece was painted specifically for my first art show coming up at the ROAM Gallery (Feb 10-March 8,2016). The theme for the show is “Love is…”.
Hawthorn, also known as the May flower, symbolizes strength & hope, and chickadees represent joy.

May the bearer of this painting find strength to love the present, and hope for the future.
Lastly, may he/she find joy in the discovery of love.

Life of Pete

Original Acrylic

Status: SOLD at the ROAM Gallery

I finally crossed off “Life of Pi” from my checklist of “must-watch” movies this weekend. Over the years, I’ve always heard lots of great things about the book, but I have never been able to sit down and read over the large volume.

Incidentally, I settled to watch to movie as I was too lazy to read the book. The movie was breath of fresh air, full of beautiful imagery that captured my imagination. This painting was inspired from one of the most magical scene from the movie.

Tea Party in the Woods

Tea Party in the Woods

Original Acrylic on Veneer Woods
9.25″ x 10.5″
$180
Status: AVAILABLE (Previously displayed at the ROAM Gallery)

The idea of painting on veneer wood popped up from a recent trip to Chicago with my friend Jane. I tried to leave the grain of the original wood expose to where-ever fits the context of the tea party. It was much harder than I imagined to paint the “negatives” for the backdrop. In the end, I’m pleased by this new piece and hope to have more pieces painted on veneer wood again in the future.

How about a change of pace? The style of this painting deviates from my norm because I had wanted to try something different. My childhood friend used to own a Sylvanian Family doll set (complete with doll house) and I used to adore looking at it.

This painting is a play-off of the charming Sylvanian Family doll set. Monsieur Chat is a sophisticated feline who enjoys a hot drink indoors during Vancouver’s March showers.

Panda Express

Panda Express

Original Acrylic
16″x 20″
$150
Status: UNAVAILABLE

It’s been a long while since my last painting because of work and also my big move to Lulu Island. The Panda Express is my first piece of the new year.

The idea of this painting is derived from an antique train set that my family used to own. We used to take it out and watch it run once a year. Since moving to Lulu Island, I’ve been hearing the chu-chu-ing of the trains almost every evening before going to bed. The sounds of this train reminds me of the toy train that my brother and I used to marvel over.

In particular, I was intrigued by the intricate details of the doorways and the petite features of the train engine. I remember thinking- I wonder where they have this little workshop full of earth fairies that build the trains?

With everyone’s busy lives nowadays, who has time to stop and smell the flowers?
During my recent trip to Korea, I ran into this gorgeous flower shop tucked away in a small street. For a minute, I stood there in awe marvelling at the flower shop.

I wonder how often do I pass by these unique places in Vancouver and never stop to appreciate its beauty?

The Mystic Forest
Original Acrylic

Ever since I was a child, I have been a big fan of both Japanese anime and American Disney.

This painting is inspired by a mash-up from both genres. Specifically, it is from my memories of Bambie  and the Grave of  the Fireflies. They were both cartoons about family and lost. It always made me sad watching both of these movies as a child, but this just proves how great the movies were in conveying and conspiring these emotions.

This painting was on display at Pizzeria Barbarella.
